Sepideh Farsi was born in Teheran and came to Paris in 1984 to study Mathematics but she turned rapidly towards cinema. One of her first works is a documentary on Iranian diaspora, THE WORLD IS MY HOME Two years later, she continued her career with a portrait of the Indian filmmaker Homi Sethna, which was awarded the ~Fipresci Award at Bomba and two other prizes in France (Cinéma du Réel). Still tied to her country, she followed up with MEN OF FIRE, a feature on firefighters in Tehran. In 2002, she came back to the question of identity with her film JOURNEY OF MARYAM, in which a young girl goes looking for her father and encounters a country besieged by religion. In 2003 followed DREAMS OF DUST which depicts a voyage between life and death. In 2006, she shot THE GAZE, in which the theme of exile and return to the country is once again a t the heart of the story. In spring 2008, still in Tehran, she shot TEHRAN WITHOUT PERMISSION using a cellphone (because of governmental restrictions on sets). In 2009, she was a member of the Best First Film Award at Locan=rno. The film and its political stands earned her a ban on entry in her country since 2009. In 2014 she directed RED ROSE, which breaks taboos of Iran cinema by including sex scenes and broaching the topic of the relation between the young rebellious generation and the one which defied the Shah’s regime. Her last documentary 7 VEILS won the Grand Prize at FIDMarseille in 2017. Farsi’s last film LA SIRÈNE is her first animation feature.
